Adobe Flash on the Road to Nowhere

This Wednesday was probably the first day on the (potentially long) path to Adobe Flash decline: the most popular video site out there – YouTube – started offering videos in Flash-less mode for browsers which support HTML 5 and h.264 video codec.
This means that today the option is available for Chrome and Safari. Then at [...]

Jobs Has a Few Words for Google & Adobe & They Ain’t Pretty: Reports

"We did not enter the search business. [Google] entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won't let them... I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing. This don't be evil mantra - It's bullshit." - Steve Jobs at an employee Town Hall the other day according to Wired, MacRummors et al although he may have said "load of crap" not "bullshit"; sources vary.

Jobs reportedly means to use "aggressive updates" to stay way out front of the Android phone.

Apple and Emotional Discussions Around Adobe Flash Player

The recent announcement of iPad has ignited yet another wave of emotional discussions around the role of Flash Player in the evolution of mankind. People easily take sides and everyone seems to know what’s right and what’s wrong. Actually the word ‘’people” is too vague in this context, because vast majority of the population has no idea what Flash Player is, and they don’t have to know! As long as they go to youtube and it plays videos people are happy and casually say, “Youtube is a great site!”

On the same note, I have no idea how my car operates. Back in my school days, I’ve learned that some stuff burns inside the engine producing another powerful stuff that make the wheels spin. Do I need to know more? Absolutely not. I lease cars and change them every three years. Once a year I visit those 10-min oil change shops, and people open up the hood and do something to my car, which supposedly helps it run longer.

Can You Fire a Team?

Yesterday, I finished my dinner in a French restaurant with traditional crème brulee. This time I’ve also ordered a small glass of Sauternes wine. Then we went to our friend’s house to follow it with some good old port.

But no matter what software developers drink or eat in February 2010, one way or the other the conversation will slide into a No-Flash-Player-on-iPad discussion. Apple pretends that they will never allow Flash Player on Steve’s OS (SOS), because it’s buggy. Adobe’s CTO, Kevin Lynch, states that Apple doesn’t cooperate.

After the third round, I made a statement that when the dust settles, everyone will thank Steve Jobs for forcing Adobe to make Flash Player better and faster, which is a win-win situation for all application developers.

Apple Should Buy Adobe

Do you guys also remember the Frenchman Philip Kahn, the charismatic founder and CEO of Borland? There were always weird stories about Kahn, that he would hire people like the young man who pumped gas into his car at a gas station, or that he had board meetings on his sailboat, or that he forgot to file his permanent residence application and almost got deported, remember he was a Frenchman living in Silicon Valley.

UPDATE: Adobe & IE Implicated as China’s Spy Holes

A zero-day Acrobat security hole in the buggy Adobe Reader, software that’s on practically every PC in the world, may be how Chinese hackers pulled off the cyber-attack on Google that has Google threatening to pull out of China, the world’s largest Internet market, according to iDefense, the VeriSign managed security unit.

CodeMash 2010

I've had the pleasure of spending yesterday and today (and I'll be here tomorrow too) at the 2010 CodeMash conference in Sandusky, at the spectacular Kalahari resort (if you've never been here, its way worth it). We attended the "precompiler" presentations yesterday, and have been to 3 presentations so far today. While the conference seems very heavy on the Microsoft and Ruby fronts (almost every presentation has had C# or Ruby code, some of them have had both), there's a lot of good stuff to come away with anyways.

For example, the two presentations we attended yesterday discussed test-driven development, something I'd never experienced before. In addition, the presentations both discussed the merits of OOP, specifically when narrowing classes down to one particular function each. This was something I'd encountered before, but never really understood -- why would I want to create a class for something I'm only doing once in one place? It wasn't until discussing a very simple problem - how to write an application to handle cash register functions - that I finally understood, thanks to the help of a fellow attendee whom I'd never spoken to before, the instances when programming like that is especially useful.

The keynote today was presented by Mary Poppendieck, who explained to us how businesses can push responsibility and decision-making as far down as possible in the IT department in order to drive up efficiency and productivity. She also discussed at what point in the development cycle developers normally freeze changes to test for bugs. The most common response is 2/3 of the way through the cycle, but often as much as 1/2 of the cycle is devoted to testing. She went on to explain that the most efficient companies spend just 1/10th of the cycle on testing, as they've developed methods of identifying bugs earlier and/or preventing bugs to begin with.

Other than the keynote, we attended an excellent presentation introducing attendees to Adobe Flex, the open source SDK for creating Flash and Adobe Air applications, a presentation introducing attendees to jQuery, a JavaScript library for manipulating the DOM, making AJAX requests, and creating animations, and a presentation on NoSQL, a group of alternative databases, such as CouchDB and Cassandra, that are less structured than typical databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.

All in all, this is so far an EXCELLENT conference, and if you do any sort of programming, I highly recommend attending next year. If nothing else, your hotel reservation includes passes to the waterpark :) But come for the waterpark, and stay for the talks.

How to Prevent Flex Numeric Nulls From Turning to Zeros in BlazeDS

This article offers a solution for handling of null values for numeric data types in Flex/Java projects. Currently, every time there’s a Flex/Java update, we end up replacing the original nulls with zeros when the user didn’t actually change that value. This article ia a silver bullet for handling numeric nulls.

How to Secure REST and JSON

Here at Layer 7 we get asked a lot about our support for REST. We actually have a lot to offer to secure, monitor and manage REST-style transactions. The truth is, although we really like SOAP and XML here at Layer 7, we also really like REST and alternative data encapsulations like JSON. We use both REST and JSON all the time in our own development. Suppose you have a REST-based service that you would like to publish to the world, but you are concerned about access control, confidentiality, integrity, and the risk from incoming threats. We have an answer for this: SecureSpan Gateway clusters, deployed in the DMZ, give you the ability to implement run time governance across all of your services:

Using Custom Type Marshallers in BlazeDS

In my previous post I pointed to the BlazeDS classes that need to be replaced in order to prevent ActionScript Number.NaN from turning into Long or Integer zeroes on the MessageBroker side. The recommendation boiled down to re-jaring flex-messaging-core.jar or placing the modified classes somewhere earlier in the application server’s classpath. If neither option is allowed, you may configure your endpoint with the custom type marshaller.

Adobe to Discusses Social Media and Government

Social media has illustrated government agencies can interact with citizens in a more engaging manner versus the traditional perception of "cold," impersonal processes, Stark explained.

Master Class on Adobe Flex in Brussels and More

After teaching our popular advanced Flex master class in New York, Boston, Toronto, London, and Moscow, we are hitting the beer capital of the world: Brussels, Belgium. This class is scheduled for the first days of March, and we hope that Flex 4 will be officially released by this date. Our book Enterprise Development with Flex should hit the book stores by then too.

To take advantage of the early bird prices register early at http://bit.ly/59DdIU.

If you can't make it to Brussells, I'll be glad to meet with you at 360 Flex in San Jose, CA on March 7-10, where I'll be presenting on one of the topic from this master class.

If you can't make it to San Jose, I'll be very happy to meet you at Flash and the City conference in May in New York City.
Apple Tries Pissing on Google’s Shoes

Hours before Google was due to trot out its Nexus One Google Phone Tuesday, Apple sent out a statement saying that more than three billion apps have been downloaded in the roughly 18 months that its iTunes App Store has been open.

Reminding Google who’s king of the hill, Apple CEO Steve Jobs added, “This is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”

Happy to report I am very busy on both the pressDOOH and Preset fronts, and seeing a lot of airports (but dodging storms).

Anyway, there is encouraging news on the Adobe Flash licensing beat - with a senior Adobe guy promising: Adobe will make an unambiguous statement in the new year.

This was from the Director of Adobe's Open Screen Project, which is Adobe's big cross-platform initiative. He found me through another Adobe guy who conceded the company's position was confusing, and promised to look into it. He found me through Stephen Randall of Locamoda. So if we do get clarity, finally, Stephen gets a gold star.

Nate Kidwell of DS newcomer Ludicast, which uses Flash extensively, has also been a big help, and pointed me (among other things) to a post on a Flash developer's blog, called ickydime.

The comments are the interesting part of the post, as it drew in some Adobe people.

One noted:

Anyone can install Adobe Flash Player from adobe.com. But to *redistribute* Player in your own device requires agreements with Adobe -- otherwise anything might get called "Player". The Open Screen Project doesn't require cash licensing, but does require certain capabilities such as the ability to update.

The developer/blogger then responded:

From your recap, it sounds as though you can install the Runtime if the device goes to Adobe.com for the installation AND if the device has the ability to update the player.

Another Adobe person chimed in, noting first that the end user licensing agreement is getting old:

If you check the date, the EULA is from Feb of 2008.

Also, keep in mind that Adobe may not be the ones distributing the player binaries. Through Open Screen Project, partners can license source for porting in which case the EULA does not come from Adobe.

Also note that OSP royalty free terms are for open systems with the goal of providing a consistent runtime for web browsing and applications. Closed systems do not qualify for royalty free licensing.

So ... the issue is at least now on the Adobe radar, though it would be great to read something, from someone, that is not burdened by licensing-speak. What I get from these exchanges is a sense - repeat sense - that everything is peachy if the digital signage playback software you develop and distribute does not include Flash right in the build. The PC being used as the playback engine needs to go out to the Internet cloud to fetch the latest version and install it on the box, and then sit, deployed, in the field, able to go back to Adobe to get updates and patches to the Flash player.

If the Flash player is part of the build and offer to customers, you need to get licensing. I think.

Stay tuned.

The Roadmap for Adobe LCDS 3

Adobe LCDS 3 really shines with its newly introduced model-driven development workflow. This article is not a review of its features, but rather an early feedback and some suggestions for future releases. Fire that guy who already reached his level of incompetency and said, “If one salesman can sell LCDS licenses for $20K a CPU, everyone can do it”. This guy is simply killing the product by making it unreachable for lots and lots of corporate clients. Change your state of mind from “these filthy rich Wall Street client should pay” to “each RIA project manager has limited budget”. BTW, have you heard of recession that we are still in?
Remember, when Adobe purchased Macromedia and changed the Flex pricing policy from $15K per server to $700 per IDE people actually started using the product? Why not to try the old trick again?

Streaming Media Using Amazon CloudFront

Streaming Media is a way to provide multimedia content in real time using Streaming Media clients such as Adobe Flash Player or JW Palyer. In general, Streaming Media is useful if you are watching Television or Movies that are served from a centralized location. Usually, Multimedia content is huge in size. The users of the Streaming Media need not wait until it gets downloaded to watch. If you are more keen on the right definition, look at this link.

Streaming Media in the Cloud by Amazon and Adobe

Amazon Web Services announced, on Wednesday, streaming media delivery for Amazon CloudFront, the content delivery service from AWS. This new feature enables streaming delivery of audio and video content, providing an alternative to progressive download where end users download a full media file. Amazon CloudFront streams content from a worldwide network of 14 edge locations, ensuring low latencies and providing cost-effective delivery. Like all Amazon Web Services, Amazon CloudFront requires no up-front investment, minimum fees or long-term contracts, and customers only pay for what they use. To learn more about Amazon CloudFront and to start streaming content, visit http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront.

Adobe Discusses Cloud Computing

In the midst of significant growth in interest and usage of online computing in government, Focus Washington's Karen Hanretty interviewed Kumar Vora, Vice President and General Manager for LiveCycle at Adobe Systems Incorporated, as part of Focus Washington's TechView series. They discussed cloud computing, transparency, and Adobe's approach to this key aspect of the government market.

Adobe Fiddles with its Web Apps

Adobe put out this press release - well, kinda, it was released at 6am Saturday morning and the company didn't bother to tell its staff about it, least of all its sales people. Anyway, it's about how Acrobat.com, Adobe's contribution to the flock of Office-challenging web apps, has hit its first upgrade, adding a bunch of reportedly user-requested features - like a prettier interface - as well as smartphone integration. Since Acrobat.com is based on Flash, guess that's a way to get a hint of Flash on the forbidden iPhone. Maybe Adobe hopes Steve Jobs won't notice.

An Adobe Flex Application for Course of Action Evaluation

If you have a few minutes I would really appreciate you checking out an application I wrote. The application automates some actions common to US Military staff planning by building a dynamic, interactive decision-matrix. I’ll discuss the use case for the application and then end with links to the source code for the app (easily read, copied, downloaded) and link to the online version of the app.

First a disclaimer: This is really a simple thing. Since it takes advantage of the powerful capabilities of Adobe Flex it is under 200 lines of code and if I were a better programmer it would probably be a whole lot smaller. And, although I think this is laid out like many old style military decision matrix graphics, I’m not much of a designer. So if you have any advice/thoughts/tips for me on either design or coding (or anything else) I would really appreciate it.

My Three iPhone Predictions For 2010

Yeah, it's this time of the year. Again. Making predictions is so tempting... This year I'll cover just the iPhone. Apple will let Flash Player on iPhone no later than October ’10. They don’t have a choice, if they want to stay competitive. Enough of a crippled Web browser already. ActionScript won’t kill, but will seriously damage Objective-C as the language of choice for development of iPhone applications. The programs written in ActionScript will be a lot more entertaining and engaging than today's iPhone applications.

Built4Flash Launched by Farata Systems

There are about 250,000 developers working with Flex and AIR. If you add an army of ActionScript developers, this number will grow substantially. Where do you go if you have a technical issue while developing RIA? As of today, there no one place to ask questions and get answers. A respected forum flexcoders uses the outdated and hard to follow Yahoo! groups. Some people try to find answers visiting blogs they trust. Some developers post their questions on Twitter.

About a year ago Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood released a well designed and easy to follow knowledge exchange stackoverflow.com, where people earn reputation by suggesting the right solutions to people’s problems. Flex/Flash/Air developers started to post their questions there among the plethora of questions on other technologies and programming languages.

They discussed cloud computing, transparency, and Adobe's approach to this key aspect of the government market. A phenomenon born out of the connectivity of the Web, cloud computing can help address key challenges such as making it easier for government to interconnect systems, share data and information, and bring people together to collaborate, Vora explained in the interview. Further, he said, cloud computing can help in delivering on the goals of transparency and openness by providing greater data and process visibility.

A Call for Clarity: the Adobe Flash Issue

When I was selling software, one of things that came up and that I was coached to use as a selling tool was the whole issue around what is OK and not OK about using Adobe Flash.

There were a few schools of thought or lines of attack, depending on how you looked at the world.

1 - the Flash End User License Agreement (EULA) expressly forbade the use of the Flash player for digital signage, and software companies needed to buy/license the developer libraries to be legit

2 - the EULA did not apply to PCs and therefore it didn't matter

3 - it was unclear, and Adobe wasn't helping add any clarity

4 - Flash for digital signage sucks, and is such a buggy, memory-leaking, CPU-intensive pig you'd be crazy to use it anyway

I hovered somewhere between 1 and 2, knew 3 was true, and figured 4 was pretty much true, but there were too many good capabilities in Flash and too much of it out there to just go away. Flash is installed on 98 per cent of PCs, after all.

I wrote a piece on this years ago and the post still comes up high in searches when I look up digital signage and Flash, but I am not, at all, certain, my assertions in that post still hold. I have been revisiting the question recently with industry contacts, and been dismayed to learn the whole issue remains clear as mud.

One contact told me the new Adobe media player, not the Flash player, makes the issue go away. Another said the Open Screen Project removed any restrictions. Another said the EULA does not apply with the latest version of the Flash player. Another said nothing has changed. Sheesh. These are all smart people and they are all operating on different points of view.

Here's what it says:

3.1 Adobe Runtime Restrictions. You may not Use any Adobe Runtime on any non-PC device or with any embedded or device version of any operating system. For the avoidance of doubt, and by example only, you may not use a Adobe Runtime on any (a) mobile devices, set top boxes (STB), handhelds, phones, web pad, tablets and Tablet PC (other than with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and its successors), game console, TV, DVD player, media center (other than with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and its successors), electronic billboard or other digital signage, Internet appliance or other internet-connected device, PDA, medical device, ATM, telematic device, gaming machine, home automation system, kiosk, remote control device, or any other consumer electronics device, (b) operator-based mobile, cable, satellite, or television systems or (c) other closed system devices.

That suggests OK for Windows-based PCs, but maybe not Linux. Who knows on Apple OS. Or does it??? Does it mean you may not use it on any digital signage device???

Oh, bother.

So I sent a note and left messages at Adobe. And got no love back.

Digital signage is all-encompassing when you live this stuff, but to Adobe, I assume it remains a little side project they keep hearing will be big, but doesn't merit much attention yet.

The Open Screen Project, which is intended to make Flash available with a consistent runtime across multiple platforms, SEEMS to suggest licensing issues will disappear:

From the FAQ: What motivated Adobe to remove the licensing restrictions from the specifications?

The SWF specification has been published since 1998. Until now, the specification had a license agreement associated with it, which said that developers could write software to output SWF but could not make software that would "play" SWF files. These license terms were initially included to prevent fragmentation, which most client technologies have experienced. These terms have worked well for Flash Player over the past decade as it now reaches over 98% of personal computers on the web with a consistent runtime, enabling things such as the video revolution we see today across the web. With this announcement, Adobe is removing this restriction from the SWF specification, as we have established a consistent runtime and we want to ensure the industry can confidently continue to support the SWF format. This will permit the development of applications that play SWF files. Adobe will, of course, remain focused on making the best, most reliable, and most consistently distributed implementation across desktops and devices.

SO ... I am doing a little manual crowd-sourcing here. I want to develop and release V1 of the definitive point of view on working with the Adobe Flash/Media Player. I want to be able to knock something out that puts to rest all the head-scratching and "I'm not sure" stuff, and clearly tells industry people, these are the rules ... if there are indeed rules.

A side project would be best practices (or is it practises? ... never nailed that one) on working with Flash and how to stop the leaks and keep systems happy.

I am hoping people will:

a - comment, usefully, below ...

b - send me their thoughts or insights ...

c - or point me to the person at Adobe, or the definitive letter or document, that says what's OK and what's off-base.

d - or Adobe sends a note that we can all use, so we can move on ... please.

Private note? dave.haynes at presetgroup.com

Adobe Cans Another 9% of its Workforce

Adobe is cutting another 680 full-time jobs worldwide, around 9% of its pre-Omniture workforce, to align its costs with its fiscal 2010 operating plan and “the realities of the business environment,” according to an SEC filing. It previously said it would cut 9% of Omniture’s 1,200 people when that deal closed last month. The company cut 600 people last December. Adobe expects the latest move to cost it a $65 million-$71million restructuring charge, including around $17 million-$19 million related to the consolidating leased facilities. It says it will incur additional restructuring expenses relating to Omniture’s operations as part of the total acquisition price.
